The Mi’kmaw Grand Council State Papers (Foreign Affairs) 1977-1984 explains the
Mawio’mi’s imperatives, advocacy, and priorities, affirming their constitutional and
inherent human rights. The Mawio’mi participated in the affirmation of inherent and treaty
rights in the decolonization of Canada in the Canada Act 1982. In 1980, the Mawio’mi
communicated to the UN Human Rights Committee about Canada’s violation of their right
to self-determination and involvement in public affairs under their treaties with Great
Britain in the UN Human Rights Committee.
